In our world today, the word gospel is used in many ways. Some speak of a prosperity gospel, others of a social gospel, and still others preach a self help gospel. But the Bible speaks of only one true gospel, the biblical gospel revealed by God through His Word. Any other message is not good news at all, but a distortion.
“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:8).
The biblical gospel is the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is not about what we do for God, but what God has done for us in Christ. At its heart, the gospel proclaims:
1. God is holy and righteous. He created the world, all people are accountable to Him (Genesis 1:1; Psalm 24:1).
2. Humanity is sinful and separated from God. All have sinned and fall short the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
3. Jesus Christ is the only Savior. He is fully God and fully man, who lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again for our justification (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
4. Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. We are not saved by works, but by trusting in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9).
5. The gospel calls for repentance and faith. To receive this good news, we must turn from our sins and believe in Christ (Mark 1:15).
This is the one and only biblical gospel, unchanging, eternal, and sufficient to save.
The Danger of False Gospels
Throughout history, people have tried to twist the gospel to fit human desires. Today, false gospels are everywhere:
  • The Prosperity Gospel teaches that God’s main goal is to make us healthy and wealthy.
  • The Moral Gospel suggests that being good or religious is enough for salvation.
  • The Social Gospel focusses only on improving society but neglects sin, repentance, and eternal life.
  • The Self-Help Gospel presents Jesus as a life coach rather than the Savior of sinners.
These are not the gospels. They may sound appealing, but they cannot save. The Apostle Paul warned that believing a false gospel leads to eternal destruction (Galatians 1:6-9).
Why the Biblical Gospel Matters Today?
1. It reveals the truth about God and man. Without the gospel, people remain in darkness about their need for salvation.
2. It is the power of God for salvation. Only the biblical gospel can change hearts and bring eternal life (Romans 1:16).
3. It unites believers worldwide. The gospel breaks barriers of culture, race, and class, making one family in Christ (Ephesians 2:14-16).
4. It brings glory to God alone. All human boasting is excluded because salvation is entirely God’s work (1 Corinthians 1:29-31).
Living and Proclaiming the Biblical Gospel
Believing the true gospel is not only about personal salvation. It calls us to live for Christ and proclaim Him to the world. Jesus commanded us to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20). Our task is not to adjust the message to suit the times, but to faithfully proclaim the unchanging truth of Christ crucified and risen.
Hold Fast to the One True Gospel
The world offers many substitutes, but there is only one biblical gospel. It is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again, offering forgiveness and eternal life to all who repent and believe. As followers of Christ, we must guard this gospel, live it out, and share it boldly.
Anything less is no gospel at all!
